Thanks to largely publicly funded research, we now have a number of extremely successful vaccines developed at record speed. However, while the UK is hoping for a return to relative normality this summer, some of the poorest countries haven't been able to even start vaccinating their population.
There is a solution that could save countless lives and potentially prevent more dangerous mutations from emerging: a temporary waiver of intellectual property rights over the vaccines to ensure countries across the world can scale up production. It has already been proposed by South Africa and India, but rich countries, including the UK, the US, and the EU, are blocking this initiative. Ahead of the next crucial meeting of the World Trade Organisation on March 10, we are calling on the UK government to support the TRIPS Waiver proposal and urge others to do the same. To support the campaign, sign the AEIP petition here, share the link or social media or retweet AEIP here. The pandemic is not over until everywhere is safe - so let's put pressure on the government to back a waiver and help end the crisis.
Another Europe Is Possible was formed in February 2016 to campaign for a Remain position in the EU referendum from a specifically left, progressive perspective. We came together from across the spectrum of the progressive left, working across party political lines to campaign for democracy, human rights, and social justice.
